Brian and Sara Fitzgerald have three children. Jesse is the oldest son and, for much of the book, is struggling in every aspect of his life. These struggles have him poised to ruin his future. Kate is the oldest daughter and middle child. She is, once again, battling cancer and the effects of so much trauma in her body. Anna is the youngest Fitzgerald child and has been used like spare parts for her sister's treatment plans. Anna is 13 years old and has been medically assisting her sister since birth. In fact, Anna was conceived for this purpose and the way she views herself and her relationship with her mother is influenced heavily by her biological beginning.
The reader is left with implications of the meanings of certain themes, but some questions are left to the reader to answer. One of the themes of the book is the fine line between what is right and wrong, especially in the medical world. The novel portrays the conflict between doing everything you can to save the life of a loved one and the limitations of its effects on your own quality of life. Kate's desire to stop fighting is in conflict with a world that believes you fight until there are no other options. Anna's medical emancipation was a major victory for her but also left her still conflicted about sacrifice and wanting her sister to live.
This lesson provided a brief summary of the book My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult that was published in 2004. It is a novel that follows the journey of Anna, a savior sister, as she fights for medical emancipation from her parents. Kate, her older sister, needs her kidney to survive cancer, but desires and convinces Anna to take these steps. Anna ultimately ends up dying in a car accident and then is able to donate her kidney.
The reader must ask him or herself if it is right for Anna to be medical parts for her sister. Should Anna be made to donate a kidney? The book also explores complicated family dynamics of sisterhood and relationships with mothers.
A belief that we are connected as one people. If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief - I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper - that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. "E pluribus unum." Out of many, one. 2ff7e9595c
